School Based Sex Education for Public High School Students in Jogjakarta

Sex is considered a taboo thing in Indonesia. Many parents  do not want to talk about it to their teenage children. The more it is hidden, the more curious the teenagers are. They tend to search from medias such as porn movies, magazines, internet, even their own peer. Even worse, they like to try on their own with their friends, without any proper knowledge. This behaviour may lead to serious problems such as sexual abuse, sexual transmitted disease, unwanted pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and many more.

Most teenagers in Jogjakarta, spend most of their time in school during weekdays. Teachers and school friends shape their identities and behaviours, including sexual behaviours. Teachers play an important role as an educator and information provider, including sex issue. In Indonesia, including urban area such as Jakarta and Jogja, sex education is not mandatory. Even if there is a sex education in certain school, it does not meet the need of what the teenagers want to know. The teachers themselves who brought this issue in front of teenagers, are somewhat uncomfortable and need to be trained.

The target of program is teenagers at public high schools in Jogjakarta. The programs include surveying the need of the target (to create material for sex education),training of teachers, partnership meeting with Minister of Education for Jogja region, sex education based on what teenagers need to know, private sex counseling, and evaluating the programs.

Here are my opinions on journals and articles I have read and learned something from:

Adolescents’ Sexuality and School-Based Sex Education in South Korea

Challenges for safer sex education and HIV prevention in services for people with intellectual disabilities in Britain

Sex Education in Croatia: Tensions between Secular and Religious Discourses

This is the suggested plan and schedule and budget needed if a program of this going to implemented
